President Joe Biden Congratulates PM Modi and NDA Alliance; US State Dept Highlights Partnership Expansion

Following a congratulatory social media post, US President Joe Biden personally called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the upcoming visit of National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to New Delhi. This call came a day after Biden acknowledged the BJP-led NDA’s historic third term.

During their conversation, Biden and Modi touched on shared priorities, with Sullivan set to engage with India’s new government on strategic technology partnerships. On June 5, Biden posted on X, celebrating Modi’s victory and expressing a commitment to strengthening India-US relations. “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential,” Biden tweeted.

Other members of the Biden administration, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, also extended their congratulations. Blinken emphasized the desire to advance the partnership between the US and India, commending the extensive voter turnout. “Congratulations to Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections. The US looks forward to advancing our partnership with the Indian government and commends the estimated 650 million voters who exercised their right to vote,” Blinken posted on X.

The US State Department issued a statement praising the conduct of the elections, noting the massive voter participation and the dedication of various stakeholders in the democratic process. “The United States congratulates Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections. With approximately 650 million voters casting their ballots over the past six weeks, these elections represent the largest exercise in democracy in human history. We commend Indian voters, poll workers, civil society, and journalists for their commitment and vital contributions to India’s democratic processes and institutions,” the statement read.

The statement also underscored the intention to deepen collaboration with India on multiple fronts, including prosperity, innovation, climate crisis, and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Modi is set to be sworn in for a third term over the weekend. Despite the BJP not securing a majority independently in the Lok Sabha elections, the NDA alliance won 292 out of 543 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 272.
