Vijay Sethupathi Steps Back from Supporting and Villain Roles, Citing Lack of Appreciation
Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi has opened up about his recent career choices, expressing his discontent with multi-starrer films and antagonist roles. Known for his versatility and impactful performances, Sethupathi has decided to refrain from taking on supporting and villain roles, despite receiving criticism from some fans.
Career Insights and Decisions
Sethupathi has made notable appearances in films like “Uppena” and “Michael,” and played antagonistic roles in blockbusters such as Vijay’s “Master,” Kamal Haasan’s “Vikram,” and Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan.” However, in a candid interview with Hindustan Times, he revealed his frustration with the lack of recognition for his efforts.
When asked about his aspirations to work with other stars in Tamil cinema, Sethupathi responded, “No, I think I’m fatigued by those kinds of films.” He elaborated, explaining that despite putting in as much effort as the lead actors, his contributions often go unacknowledged. “You contribute to the film as much as the star, but no one talks about it,” he said.
Moving Away from Typecast Roles
Sethupathi confirmed his decision to step away from villain and guest roles during the promotions of “Merry Christmas.” He stated, “I don’t want to play villain roles and guest roles going forward.” This decision stems from the repetitive nature and comparisons to his previous performances. His roles in “Master” as Bhavani and “Vikram” as Sandhanam were criticized for their similarities, which reportedly made him initially hesitant to take up the role in “Vikram.”
Future Projects
Vijay Sethupathi will next be seen in his 50th film, “Maharaja,” directed by Nithilan Saminathan of “Kurangu Bommai” fame, with Anurag Kashyap playing a pivotal role. Additionally, he has “Viduthalai Part 2” lined up in his upcoming projects.
Sethupathi’s shift in career focus reflects his desire to be appreciated for his work and avoid being pigeonholed into specific types of roles. His fans eagerly await his upcoming films, anticipating another round of stellar performances.
