About Devarattam: A Dance of Heritage and Spirituality
Devarattam, originating from Tamil Nadu, holds a revered place in Indian folk traditions. Its name, meaning “dance of gods,” reflects its cultural and spiritual significance. With thirty-two rhythmic steps, or adavus, this captivating dance form serves as an expressive “rendition to God.” Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Devarattam combines martial arts with graceful movement, helping dancers develop body balance, strength, and emotional expression. As part of the dance, the traditional Urmi, a double-headed percussion instrument, fills the atmosphere with resonant beats, adding depth and authenticity to each movement.
